Configure Vercel AI Gateway, Google Gemini, OpenAI, Anthropic, or Ollama for AI features
Moneywright uses AI to categorize transactions, detect subscriptions, and power the chat assistant. You bring your own API key — your data goes directly to your chosen provider, never through Moneywright servers.
When you first open Moneywright, you'll be asked to configure at least one AI provider before you can start using the app.
Which Provider Should I Choose?

Our recommendation: Start with Vercel AI Gateway — it's the easiest to set up and gives you access to models from all providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI Grok, GLM, MiniMax) with a single API key.
Vercel AI Gateway (Recommended)
Vercel AI Gateway is the easiest way to get started. You get access to all major AI providers through a single API key, with no identity verification required.
Available Models
Through Vercel AI Gateway, you can use:
- Google: Gemini 3 Flash, Gemini 3 Pro, Gemini 2.5 Pro/Flash
- OpenAI: GPT-5.2, GPT-5 Mini, GPT-5 Nano, GPT-4.1
- Anthropic: Claude Opus 4.5, Claude Sonnet 4.5, Claude Haiku 4.5
- xAI: Grok 4, Grok 4.1 Fast
- Others: GLM 4.7, MiniMax M2.1
Setup
- Go to vercel.com and sign up (free)
- Create a new project or select an existing one
- Go to Settings → AI
- Enable AI Gateway and copy your API key
Add to Moneywright
- Open Moneywright settings (gear icon)
- Go to AI Providers
- Select Vercel AI Gateway
- Paste your API key
- Choose your preferred model (we recommend Gemini 3 Flash for best value)
Google Gemini
Google Gemini offers excellent results with competitive pricing. Gemini 3 Flash is particularly good for transaction categorization.

- Go to aistudio.google.com
- Sign in with your Google account
- Click Get API key in the left sidebar
- Click Create API key
- Copy the key
Add to Moneywright
- Open Moneywright settings
- Go to AI Providers
- Select Google
- Paste your API key
- Select Gemini 3 Flash (recommended)
Pricing
Google offers a free tier for testing. For regular use, you'll need to add a payment method. Pricing is very competitive — typically a few cents per statement.
OpenAI
OpenAI provides the GPT-5 series, which offers excellent accuracy.

Setup
- Go to platform.openai.com
- Sign up or log in
- Important: You'll need to verify your identity and add funds to your account
- Navigate to API Keys
- Click Create new secret key
- Copy the key
Note: OpenAI requires identity verification and prepaid credits before you can use the API. This can take a few hours to process.
Add to Moneywright
- Open Moneywright settings
- Go to AI Providers
- Select OpenAI
- Paste your API key
- Select GPT-5 Mini (recommended)
Anthropic (Claude)
Anthropic's Claude models provide the highest quality results, especially for complex analysis and chat.

- Sign up or log in
- Important: You'll need to verify your identity and add funds to your account
- Navigate to API Keys
- Click Create Key
- Copy the key
Note: Anthropic requires identity verification and prepaid credits. Claude is the most expensive option but provides the best quality.
Add to Moneywright
- Open Moneywright settings
- Go to AI Providers
- Select Anthropic
- Paste your API key
- Select Claude Haiku 4.5 for parsing or Claude Sonnet 4.5 for chat
Ollama (Local AI)
Run AI models entirely on your computer. No API keys, no cloud, complete privacy — but requires more setup and a capable computer.
Requirements
- 8GB+ RAM (16GB recommended)
- macOS, Windows, or Linux
- ~4-8GB disk space per model
- For best performance: Apple Silicon Mac or dedicated GPU
Install Ollama
- Download from ollama.com
- Install and run Ollama
- Pull a model:

- Make sure Ollama is running (

Performance note: Local models are slower than cloud APIs and may produce lower quality categorization. For the best experience, we recommend using a cloud provider.
Troubleshooting
"Invalid API key"
- Make sure you copied the entire key
- Check that you're using the right provider's key
- Verify the key hasn't been revoked
- For OpenAI/Anthropic: ensure you've added funds to your account
"Rate limit exceeded"
- Wait a few minutes and try again
- Add more credits to your account
- Switch to a different provider
"Insufficient credits"
- Add funds to your provider account
- Switch to Vercel AI Gateway or Google Gemini (easier billing setup)
Ollama not connecting
- Make sure Ollama is running:
ollama serve - Check the URL is correct (default:
http://localhost:11434) - Verify you've pulled at least one model:
